Powder Magazine
(Digital)

Client Overview:

Widely regarded as the gold standard of ski publications, Powder Magazine was created by skiers, for skiers, driven by a deep passion for both the sport and the art of storytelling. Built on a photo-driven editorial model, Powder set itself apart by collaborating with the industry’s top photographers and writers, capturing the essence of skiing through stunning imagery and compelling narratives.

This commitment to authentic storytelling extended beyond print, with Powder’s website, digital features, and social media channels embracing the same high-quality visual and editorial standards, ensuring a seamless and immersive experience across all platforms.

Project Overview:

As Art Director for Powder Magazine from 2011 to 2015, I led the creative direction across print, digital, and event branding, ensuring a cohesive and impactful visual presence across all platforms. While Powder was best known for its award-winning print issues, my role extended to designing for the website, social media, digital projects, and special event branding.

Operating within a small but highly agile editorial team, I effectively functioned as a one-person art department, overseeing and producing all creative assets with close collaboration from the photo department. Key projects included:

  • The Powder Awards – Annual industry event celebrating the best in ski films and media.

  • Ski Town Throwdown – A digital, March Madness-style contest ranking ski towns across North America.

  • Premium Digital Features – High-profile co-sponsored editorial projects such as ‘The Human Factor’ and ‘The Experience Sage Project’.

This role required versatility, creativity, and strategic design thinking, allowing me to craft engaging visual experiences that resonated with Powder’s passionate audience while supporting brand partnerships and digital growth.
